Here I am demonstrating a cute basket project designed by the friend Denise Morgan.  It's created with Aleene's Satin Sheen and Aleene's Boxmaker.

Vintage Aleene's Creative Living Television Show Shrink-It How-to Video

I love shrink plastic!  I was assigned so many Aleene's Shrink-It segments that Tiffany Windsor dubbed me The Queen of Shrink-It way back in the day!  Check out this video for amazing ideas!

Mixed Media Workshop

As I am getting ready to teach a mixed media workshop tonight, I realize that I've been creating mixed media for years but I never called it that.  When I was a designer on the Aleene's Creative LivingTelevision Show I was assigned a particular product to use in my project.  I would make a project but always added several elements or layers to it to make it interesting. Whether it's called crafting or mixed media it's fun to be creative and add your own twist to any project.  I've told the students tonight there are no rules so I'm excited to see what they create from the items in the treasure chest they get to pick from...pictures later tonight or tomorrow of their creations. Can't wait!

Aleene's Creative Living Television Show

I posted the Shrinky Dinks Butterfly Necklace (below) on my facebook page and received this comment from an Aleene's show watcher - "I have all of you including Aleene on my friend's lists...you'd think I won the lottery when I discovered you ladies on here. That show brings such fond memories. ..I was a stay at home mom and it was one of the hilights of my day. That and watching the Home show. Ahhh...the good old days!"  Come on over to facebook and friend me at Joan Martin Fee - I'd love to hear from you!

Tissue Paper Art

Heidi Borchers, the daughter of Aleene from Aleene's Creative Living Television Show and Magazine taught a group of us how to make this really cool graffiti paper using tissue and paint!  This frame is going to be a gift for my nephew - think a 17-year-old will like it?

Aleene's Vintage Instruction Sheets

I was doing a little closet cleaning and ran across a HUGE binder filled with 350 (yes, I counted them!) Aleene's instruction sheets.  It's time to share these amazing projects with others so here's your chance to be the proud owner of years of Aleene's Creative Living history.  The projects are holiday and everyday so there's certainly a lot of crafting territory covered! Please contact me if interested and we can iron out the details.

Aleene's Mini Reunion

Last night was if time had stood still.  We had a mini Aleene's reunion and for some it had been years and years since they'd seen each other.

There was Beth, the floor director of the Aleene's Creative Living television show (she kept our taping schedule on track - we usually taped 8-12 segments Monday through Friday), Tiffany Windsor, host of the show, Heidi Borchers, designer extraordinaire, Sharon Williamson took over from me as the instruction writer when I went on to be the editor of Aleene's Creative Living magazine, Lori was the producer making sure once the segments were taped that they were edited and ready for airing on television and Jean was a segment producer doing all the before, during and after handling of the people who appeared on the show.

It was great reminiscing, catching up and planning for upcoming reunions.

To think a bottle of glue started it all...

Ouch!!!!

It was one of those days...I'd finished up a big project and was looking forward to getting out in the yard and doing some weeding and eventually planting in my yard that hadn't seen love for about 30 years. That's when the unexpected happened. I was coming down my stairs and stopped to check out the wood railing and was thinking I could put a little Murphy's Oil or something on a bad scuffed area and make it look so much better. That's when IT happened. I still don't know what IT was but IT turned my life upside down.

Next thing I knew, I was on the floor, several steps down from where I'd been on the stairs. In that surreal moment I tried to put weight on my leg but that didn't work. I crawled to the phone and told a friend I needed her help. I was impressed with only an hour and a half visit to the emergency but what came at the end of all that wasn't good news - a broken ankle. So, I've been recuperating a little over a week and I have to tell you I'm bored with cooking shows (and wishing Aleene's Creative Living television show was still on the air) and can't do much more than lay around for the next 6-8 weeks. A friend called today saying we're going to have a coloring contest this week.

So, the crafter in me is already coming up with projects to make with my lovely boot. Anyone out there made a boot / cast into something creative? I will have to wear it for quite a while longer so I'll let you in on my creative thoughts. Believe me, throwing it in the fireplace and lighting it on fire has come to mind more than once.

Hoppingly yours,
Joan

Get Those Old Records Off the Shelf

We all have them...a pile of old records and no record player or the records are so scratched that they won't play. Here's a fun project to preserve the album covers - make a tray for that special person (you included!) and it will be music to their ears...My buddy, Cheryl Ball, from the old Aleene's Creative Living television show days and I put together tons of ideas to repurpose the old records in our ebook - you can check them out at http://stores.lulu.com/craftproductsatyahoodotcom

My Birthday Goes On and On and On...

Don't you just love it when your birthday celebrations go on and on??? In my case, it's two months - yes, two!!! I got together with my friends from the Aleene's TV days - Jean and Denise (and Denise's daughter, Leslie) this weekend and we had a fondue meal, went to see Inception (still scratching my head on a few of the things from that movie) and went back to Jean's and had this most decadent cake!!! You can't see it in the picture, but there are cookie chunks on top, on the sides and mixed with the frosting between the layers!!! Yes, I walked a TON the next day!

Aleene and PattieWack at CHA

I so missed seeing Aleene at CHA. Here's a picture of Aleene and PattieWack in the i love to create booth. I learned so much from Aleene during my eight years at Creative Living and am thankful for each and every one of the hats / experiences I had there.

Morro Bay Avocado & Margarita Festival

Avocado and Margarita Babes in Morro Bay

Denise and Jean, former co-workers at Aleene's Creative Living, came up for 'green day' in Morro Bay - avocados and margarita's. I hadn't seen Jean in years and years - thanks ladies for an awesome day - loved shopping in my home town! AND, Leslie Ann, Denise's daughter, was our official photographer - she'll be 21 in just a few days - she's not the little girl I knew back in the Aleene's days - time does march on so quickly.

We tasted yummy avocado themed food including Avocado Ice Cream (it was OK, give me chocolate!) and we did partake in a margarita even though it was chilly.

Harbor Festival this weekend - always something fun going on in town.

Marlene Watson

If you watched even one segment of Aleene's Creative Living Television Show, then you know Marlene Watson. She appeared on hundreds, if not thousands of segments. I wanted to pass along that Marlene had a stroke and is home recovering. She’s using a walker to get around, but is in overall good health otherwise. If you'd like to send Marlene well-wishes, please email them to me and I will make sure she gets them. My email address is in the upper sidebar.

Make it a fantastic day!

Aleene's Creative Living Publications

Aleene's Creative Living Magazines and Books

I'm cleaning and really want to find good homes for a ton of Aleene's Creative Living magazines and books. I have thought many times this week that I could just take them down to the local thrift store, but I want them to go to someone who knows the history and would appreciate them. Please email me if you're interested and we'll work something out. craftproducts@yahoo.com

Wonderful Indulgences

Decadence…

It has been a week of wonderful indulgences...last Saturday I had brunch with friends at a funky coffee shop where we sat and chatted for hours listening to a great guitarist/singer.

One evening I treated a friend (and myself) to a facial. My friend has had many trials in her life and it was time she got pampered. When our facials were done, I came out to find her propped up against the wall with a glow to her face and a smile that I hadn’t seen in a long time. The ladies in the shop were kind enough to ‘make me over’ because I was going out to dinner at a very nice restaurant with another friend. It was absolutely divine to catch up, have a wonderful dinner and listen to live music. I had the most fantastic dinner – there was some fancy name for it, but it boiled down to Lobster Ravioli in a light creamy tomato sauce with shrimp – divine!

The next night, I had dinner with Cheryl Ball – yes, THE Cheryl Ball from the Aleene’s Creative Living television show. Cheryl and I go back a long, long way, so we chat about the past, present and the future. We had the most wonderful comfort Italian food on a rainy, cold evening.

One evening I took the short drive to where my family lives to drop off my nephew’s birthday gift. I got him one share of Marvel Enterprises since he’s a huge Spiderman fan. It won’t mean a lot to a 6 year old, but hopefully someday it will. But what this started was something at work – I told a co-worker and she told another co-worker and now she told one of her sons she’d front the money for a share of stock if he researches and finds out about the stock to purchase. Fantastic!

Back to my evening…I drove my parents to my brother’s house to look at his latest remodel project – last I was there, there was a 6 foot hole in their family room floor. The floor now looks fabulous!!! As we got back to my parents house, I asked them if they knew the Irving Berlin song What Will I Do? And sure enough they did. So, I popped in my ‘training’ CD and we sat in their driveway and sang the song. I haven’t practiced my singing hardly this week at all –yikes!

I indulged in a wonderful massage late last night, came home, chilled and went to bed early.

It’s Saturday and I don’t have many things on my to do list. We’re expecting a huge storm later today, so I’m planning on staying in until I go out tonight with a friend to dinner and to see the play Tuesdays with Morrie.

Are you thinking about the Craft Challenge for March? I know I sure am! I’ve started my list of projects.

Make it a fantastically creative day!
